Favorite Experience:
Every once in a while, my job as a pilot aligns with my competitive model airplane passion. One time a couple of years ago, I had a short haul trip to La Paz, Mexico, delivering the supplies for an ocean front resort that was being built there by an America company. Where I got lucky is that the trip coincided with a 1-day international competitive flying competition that was being held there. So, I packed up my fastest model plane and invited my girlfriend, Renee (who of course, is a surfer girl) to come along with me in the jump seat. Once we got there, the first thing we did was rent a dirt bike which is needed to go chase down your model plane on the dunes. Renee also loved motorcycles but had never done off-road before, especially not on Mexican sand dunes. The day of the race, we flew 3 heats and were in the finals for that afternoon. The last heat took off at around 5pm and for reasons unknown, my model plane's remote control lost connection with my controller on the ground and took off south like a bat out of hell, completely not being controlled by me! Renee jumped on the back of the bike with me and was the "spotter" and we rode like demons over probably 15 miles of pristine sand dunes until the plane finally ran out of gas and touched down. To add to the drama, it turned out I had not topped off the gas tank of the bike, and as we approached the plane to retrieve it, the bike sputtered to a halt - out of gas! 15 miles from anyone or anything!
It became pretty obvious to us that we were stuck there for the night, so in classic "Robinson Crusoe" style, put together a simple lean-to shelter from palm fronds and made a bed from dried beach grass. While I was finishing up that final touches of building a "house for the night", Renee came running up to me holding at HUGE sea conch shell - with the live conch still in it. Neither one of us had a match or a lighter to start a fire, but i did have a utility knife with me that I used to make a nice "conch sushi" dish for us to eat for dinner. So, as the sun set over the Pacific Ocean, we nibbled on raw conch and fell into an embrace and kiss that lead to probably the most blissful love-making I have ever experienced. Our naked bodies merged on that beach grass bed in our little palm frond hut and we made love again and again as the stars came out for the night. |
