Choke the chicken. Date with Rosie Palm and her 5 sisters. Spanking the monkey. Wanking. Jerking off. All euphamisms for men masturbating. I'm sure there are plenty more. What do women call masturbation? Most of the time it's just 'playing with ourselves' if we even talk about it. When you bring up the topic of women masturbating usually you just get blushes, ducked heads and/or giggles. Why is it a 'bad thing' to talk about? At some time or another we all do it, intentionally or accidentally. What's the big deal?

One of the finest little gifts you can give yourself is an orgasm. Costs you nothing at all. An orgasm releases tension, balances out chemical and hormone levels in the body, not to mention that a really good orgasm does wonders for the attitude. Any of this sound like bad stuff?

Maybe the taboo grew because masturbation usually happens alone. There's some logic to that, maybe. Nobody wants their friends to think they masturbate because they can't get a date. Then again, masturbation is not usually a spectator event. How many people do you want in your head while you contemplate the exact pressure points to get yourself off? Masturbation is mainly solo entertainment, geared to the ultimate pleasure of one person - you. While playing with yourself with a partner watching but not touching can be a major turn on, it's an exceptional situation. When you're on your own you're free to try out different things and see if you like them without watchful eyes on you. It's about your senses, your feelings, your reactions. Seems like a guarantee of a good time, since you'll always know you best.

Could it be guilt that leads to all this denial? Possible. For how many years was sex referred to as a 'guilty pleasure'? One would think that after the sexual revolution in the 1960's and 1970's that view would have crumbled to dust like so many burned brassiers. Add in the very real dangers of STD's (sexually transmitted diseases) and masturbation seems the safest way to get off without getting very sick or dead. Yes, yes Jocelyn Elders said the same kind of thing and got in major hot water. We're talking about adults here, enjoying grown up pleasures in a responsible, knowledgeable way.
The issue is perspective really. Maybe some people are stuck on the idea that anything that makes them feel as good as masturbation does has got to be wrong in some way. Here's my observation in response to that view: Queen Victoria introduced very repressive social attitudes toward sex. During her reign, the first publicly documented serial killer was spawned and he preyed on sexually active women. Does that tell you something? Nuff said.

Give yourself a little private time. Here's a new euphamism for ladies today: Stroke the kitty *wink*
