The last several days had comprised the longest, most frustrating week of his life. Jordan Dunn, the marquis of Ashton, could not believe his jaded world had been turned upside down by a mere slip of a girl--a virgin at that!

Lady Thea Blanchard wasn't even twenty, for God's sake. He'd actually considered himself a man of the world, oh yes, a sexually experienced Lord of the Realm, to take and do as he pleased, consequences be damned--

And where had that attitude gotten him? Sacrificed to the altar of lust, in a bad way for a girl whose innocence had conquered the cynic in him.

Christ! He had never been happier.

Jordan caught himself whistling more than once while arranging to leave for Ingram Hall.

"What do you think, boys?" he addressed his dogs, Rufus and Apollo. "Shall we make room for a Lady Ashton?"

The great beasts whined and wagged their tails furiously, happy about their master's sudden jovial manner and tone rather than its meaning.

Jordan gave each hound a thorough rubbing. He laughed at their eager appreciation of his attentions. "That's it, my lads, have your free will while it lasts, for I have a feeling we will never be the same again."

Thea fidgeted in her seat at the luncheon table. Listening to the commonplace chatter of her neighbors, the wild orgy of the night before might well have been a dream.

Her whist partners from several nights earlier were seated at her table. The worldly widow from London, Lady Amelia Beckensall, looked none the worse for wear after a night of debauchery. Still in her early forties, Lady Amelia glowed like a schoolgirl after a first kiss.

So much for claims of the Fountain of Youth. Thea figured a stint at Miss Rose's was enough to shed years if not decades off attitude and countenance.

There was nothing for it but to join in the conversation and try to keep her mind off Jordan. She had no idea when he'd arrive today and had to fight the urge to wait with her nose pressed to a front window.

". . . and Beltane Eve, no less." Thea caught the end of Lord Roger Tidbury's thread of discourse.

"You know Beltane has not been a pagan holiday since--well, since before your time, young man," Lady Amelia teased

"Of course not, dear lady, but you know as well as I that our Miss Rose is known for such entertaining amusements." This comment brought pink to the cheeks of all the ladies at the table and grins from the men. "Surely," Lord Roger continued, "we will observe a bit of the Pagan tonight. Beltane is, after all, a celebration of fertility."

They all grasped his meaning without effort.

Thea was familiar with the various old-time Beltane rites of passage--the suggestively phallic May Pole, Druid Bel-fires kindled at sundown to usher in seasonal fertility and rebirth, and of course, dancing, drinking, and all manner of sexual transgressions--pure Paganism.

The Puritans had put a stop to all the sexual frolicking in days of yore, but she had to agree with young Lord Roger--she wouldn't put it past Miss Rose to revive Paganism on the grounds of Ingram Hall, the haven for free-spirits.

After forcing herself to eat some of the sumptuous fare, Thea decided to walk the grounds. If she sat still any longer she'd go mad. But he didn't really want to be alone to brood over Jordan's arrival.

"Lady Amelia, would you fancy a stroll?" she whispered discreetly to avoid a group outing.

The lovely widow looked delighted by the prospect. "Oh, my dear, that's just the thing," she whispered back, her pretty blue eyes casting furtive glances and the talking men. "Let us fetch our wraps right away."

Amelia stood and the men at the table quickly rose in attendance. "Gentlemen, Lady Thea and I wish to retire to our rooms and catch up on correspondence. If you'll be good enough to excuse us."

After a few good-natured pleas for their continued company, Thea and Lady Amelia made their escape and ran up the grand stairway to their rooms laughing like schoolgirls.

Donning shawls, the two ladies left the Hall to explore the back lawns. Thea loved the other woman's exuberance and positive, open outlook. She would strive to be like Lady Amelia--yes, she would.

Thea could feel the change in the air, the smell of new growth. "Oh, it's a beautiful day, isn't it?" She looped her arm through Lady Amelia's and they walked companionably through the sloping flowered terraces behind the Hall.

"My dear, if you don't mind my asking," Lady Amelia started, not in the least interested if Thea minded or not, "I can't help but wonder why you are here? It is obvious you are a lady of breeding and you are very beautiful. To be perfectly frank, I just can't imagine your family condoning your visit to the Hall."

Thea cast her eyes downward, uncomfortable that Lady Amelia had hit upon a subject she had pushed aside since her first dismal meeting with Reuben Granville.

She had no family to protect her anymore.

She had to be strong or risk falling prey to ruthless men with ruthless needs.

"I only have my sister, Tess. Everyone else is gone."

"Lord in Heaven, girl. This world is no place for the innocent. You have no protector?"

Thea immediately thought of Jordan and tears streamed down her face. "I--I am in love," she said dejectedly.

Lady Amelia stopped dead in her tracks and clutched Thea to her ample, perfumed bosom. "Oh, there are the tears. Now, now, my dear," she soothed, stroking Thea's hair. "It is a horrible, magnificent thing, love, and we women are so susceptible to emotion it has forced me to plunge a fist heavenward in anger on more than one occasion, of this you can be sure!"

Thea had to smile at the image of the brazen widow threatening God for his mistreatment of lowly woman in the grand scheme of things.

She swiped her cheeks and looked at Lady Amelia. "I know he feels some affection, and has promised to provide for my sister and me . . . but . . . I am not sure he shares the depth of feeling I have for him."

"Well, my dear, two out of three ain't bad, as they say." Lady Amelia laughed. "I've had four husbands. Married the first out of duty, second out of love, third for security, and fourth for sex, and only my dear Rothgar--the second--I loved with all my heart and soul until I was practically destroyed because of it."

Thea stared at the other woman in wonder.

"Oh, pooh--don't look so surprised. Love is ecstasy when it is reciprocated, and hell when it's not. I say, go for sex every time."

Lady Amelia linked arms again and drug Thea along the garden path. When Thea didn't offer any argument, Amelia softened. "I know how hard it is, my dear, and I didn't mean to make light of your predicament. True love is worth all the risk in the world, and if we're lucky enough to savor it for even a moment, we're better off for the experience."

The widow tapped her closed fan gently on Thea's arm and laughed again. "But if all else fails, there's nothing better than a ten-inch rod attached to a young, virile man no more than double that measure in age."

"Lady Amelia, you're too awful!" Thea said in mock condemnation.

"You know it's true," the widow insisted, gesturing with her hands an approximation of ten inches, then winking wickedly.

How could Thea possibly disagree after the week she had just spent in the company of so many well-endowed men? Amelia had helped to brighten her mood considerably. "Of course it's true, no doubt about it."

"That's my girl! Now, tell me about this love of yours."

A warm infusion settled in Thea's heart and ran forth through her veins. How to describe Jordan? His physical beauty was only part of his allure. "He is like a drug that affects every fiber of my being . . . he is everything . . . a reason to glory in the heat of the sun and the glow of the moon."

"My word--poetry! You are smitten. That is too bad, but there's nothing for it," Lady Amelia said, shaking her head. "You must take the wild ride and see where it leads you."

"He is supposed to come for me today, but I had really expected him before now." Thea had not, until that moment, voiced her fears--she had expected Jordan earlier. It was already one o'clock. Wasn't he dying to see her as much as she was dying to see him?

"See there? It has already begun--the pains of love. Oh, let us change the subject, my fault for ever bringing it up." Lady Amelia turned at took Thea's hands in her own. "Don't listen to an old fool like me. I'm sure your man will come. He has a prize in you and has figured that out by now unless he is completely senseless."

Thea flushed at the compliment. "Thank you, m'lady."

"Oh, nonsense. Nothing to thank me for. Just speaking the truth as I see it." Amelia fanned her face with practiced grace and led the way down the path. Thea followed.

Lady Amelia called over her shoulder, "Let us cool off by the lake before we go back. I have a feeling young Lord Tidbury is correct. Unless I am sadly mistaken, tonight will find us all wallowing in paganism, and happy for it."

By six o'clock, the sky had darkened considerably to match Thea's mood. No sign of Her Man, as Lady Amelia had phrased it. Thea was past being hurt and had progressed to angry. How dare he respond to her note so passionately and then have the nerve to stand her up?

If Jordan Dunn dared show his face this evening she would not fall at his feet in gratitude--she would spit in his eye!

Died a thousand Deaths, he'd proclaimed in that letter, stating his great need for her. Bastard liar!

Thea was seething, fit to be tied. Lucy tried to help her with her hair, and drape her body with the yardage of white lawn that was supposed to serve as some sort of pagan garment. But Thea just could not hold still.

"M'lady! The Beltane ceremony will begin in an hour's time. You must let me get you dressed and ready," Lucy scolded

"They can all go to hell," Thea muttered, bracketing her hands on her hips, ". . . liars and rogues, every one . . ."

"Now Miss Thea, you know it isn't as bad as all that. If your man says he's coming for you today, then he will."

Thea snorted at Lucy's optimism. "How would you know, I ask you?"

Lucy smiled. "How could he not, m'lady . . . look at yourself."

Thea settled down long enough to cast a gaze in the mirror. Lucy had arranged her hair in long ringlets, cascading over her shoulders and down her back, interwoven with garlands of flowers and ferns.

Her body, sheathed only in flimsy, white fabric--so thin, the shadow of her pubic hair and aureole surrounding pointed nipples shone through. She looked willowy, free form, like a fey creature--a forest nymph come to life.

The effect was quite startling . . . natural and earthy.

For a brief moment, Thea ignored her anger and betrayal and stared at her image, delighted. "You have done wonders, Lucy. This outfit makes me feel wild." The sensation of the fine fabric falling against her naked breasts and thighs was quite erotic.

"You are Queen of the Fairies tonight, m'lady. The symbol of fertility and a prosperous season."

"Me? I'm to be Queen?"

"Miss Rose insisted. It will be so exciting! You look beautiful . . . enough to make any old Pagan ghost stand up and take notice, an plenty of living men as well."

Thea shivered at the thought. She had never been to a Beltane ceremony before. She and her sister hadn't even danced around a Maypole as children.

"What am I to do? I don't know the rituals."

Lucy began weaving a stem of meadow buttercup through her own hair. "No need to worry. Miss Rose will guide the ceremony and I will explain more on the way. You will just know--it's hard to explain--you become . . . entranced."

Thea remembered her mind-altering experience earlier in the week when her dreams of men in the woods had turned out to be a reality the next morning. Would they all be drugged?

"I'm not sure . . . I'd rather not take anything--"

"Oh, nothing like that, miss," Lucy assured her. "There will be wine enough for certain, but it is the mood that will take you out of yourself, not a drug."

Thea was unconvinced. She didn't believe in trances or trickery. She retrieved her kid slippers but Lucy stopped her. "No shoes. We are naked as the day we were born under these."

Not surprising. Thea figured she was ruined for corsets, probably wouldn't be able to stand wearing one ever again. The freeness of going nude under clothing was just too precious to relinquish.

Jordan would love it if she ignored conventional fashion codes. But would she be living with him?

Where in the hell was he?

Dressed so beautifully, eager to throw herself in his arms, Thea's anger had waned and tears threatened again. She had no idea how she would manage to get through the ridiculous Beltane ritual.

Her heart was not in it. She didn't want to frolic with the others. She didn't want to have sex with other men. She wanted to curl up in bed and close her eyes and dream of Jordan claiming her forever.

"Come along, m'lady. Wouldn't do to keep everyone waiting." Lucy finished securing peach colored fabric around her middle and then headed for the door.

Thea picked up her filmy white train and reluctantly followed.

She sat atop a white stallion, a horse far too driven by animal instincts to make a good mount, and fumed over Jordan's betrayal. The great beast nickered, his breath visible in the cooling twilight air.

He tossed his glorious head, jingling all the little bells woven into his mane and tail, and stamped beneath her. Thea kept him reined in, waiting in a copse of trees at the base of a hill.

Thea thought if she were naked, she would become Lady Godiva and ride a white horse through the streets with only her hair to hide her body.

But she was just Thea Blanchard, playing at being a fairy May Queen, bedecked in flowers and gossamer threads, awaiting her part in this bizarre evening.

She bent over the horse, Lancelot's, neck and smoothed her hands over his sleek coat. "There, there, my fine stud. Not much longer."

Such a ridiculous name for a horse. She refused to call him Lancelot--Lance, if she must.

Four men sat on the ground at the top of the hill, their silhouettes outlined against the bright orange glow of the setting sun. They pounded on drums, picking up a plodding rhythm. Lance sidestepped and pawed the ground, eager to go.

Thea shivered. A breeze, rippling through the trees, made the forest come alive. An owl hooted, answering the call of the drums. She rubbed the gooseflesh on her bare arms and wished the Mistress of Ingram Hall would hurry things along.

Thea could see all the inhabitants of the Hall gathering around two huge stacks of cut timber on the hilltop. They were all dressed similarly to her, loose-fitting lengths of cloth wrapped around naked bodies--flowers adorning the women, greenery, the men.

But nobody wore white except Thea.

She watched through the trees, the drums so loud and relentless they echoed deep in her chest. The crowd parted into two groups and moved to ring each mound of firewood.

Then the drumming came to an abrupt halt.

The rustle of the wind filled the void and rippled the skirts and unbound hair of the people on the hill.

Miss Rose appeared, as if from thin air, between the two unlit bonfires. Her beautiful auburn hair hung down her back and blew around her shoulders, catching golden highlights from the setting sun.

The Mistress raised her arms over her head. "I am Orlagh, the golden lady." Orlagh, no longer Miss Rose, began to chant. Thea had never heard anything like it in her life. The woman's voice transformed into an eerie melody, deep and hypnotic

After a few moments, she spoke again. "I call the druid priests forward."

Colin and John, dressed for the part in brown hooded cloaks, brought flaming torches and stood on either side of the golden lady.

Orlagh brought her arms down to touch the shoulders of each man flanking her. "We will lure the sun's light down to earth."

The drumming picked up again. Thea jerked a little and had to pull hard on the reins to keep Lance at bay. He snorted and pressed his ears back. His eyes widened--large reflecting orbs in the waning sun.

The sun had settled low, half buried behind the melting line of the distant horizon. They all watched, mesmerized, as the huge orange globe sank out of sight, leaving a bulbous glowing halo in its wake.

Then the druid priests torched the two log pyramids, setting them ablaze, capturing the energy of the sun.

"I proclaim the triumph of light over dark for the next half year!" Orlagh shouted, and the crowd went wild.

The golden lady raised her arms in the air once more for silence. When the group quieted, she spoke again. "I call forth the May Queen."

Oh, God, this was it. Thea swallowed and relaxed her grip on the reins, which was the only urging Lance needed to break out of the tree cover and burst up the hill.

With long powerful strides, Lance gained the top of the hill in a matter of seconds. It was all Thea could do to keep her seat. He pranced between the fires and circled in place until Thea finally got him settled.

"On this night, the veil between the magical world and mortal world is thin," Orlagh proclaimed to the hushed crowd. "Witches, fairies and ghosts wander freely, looking to prey upon unsuspecting humans. We will please them heartily so they leave us to our own . . ."

Thea could see Miss Rose's face up close now. As Orlagh, the golden lady, she had transformed herself into a beautiful, luminescent apparition--a being drenched in sun-kissed hues and brilliant gold draping. Thea was impressed.

"Our Queen shall lead us in dance!" Orlagh bowed at the waist and the two Druid priests, Colin and John, helped Thea dismount.

Lucy had explained the May Queen's part in the dancing ceremony, so Thea knew what was expected of her. Holding her train, she made her way to a table with wine and picked up a goblet, downing the fruity liquid in one swallow.

Then she picked up an unlit torch from a pile near the table and thrust it into one of the blazing bonfires. When it caught flame, Thea brandished it like a wand, whirling it over her head to imitate the circling sun.

The crowd came alive, men and women following the May Queen's lead, drinking and cavorting around the bonfires, waving fire sticks about. The drums picked up tempo and stomping bare feet kept time to the rhythm.

Thea was pushed along in the sea of laughing, shrieking bodies. Someone handed her another goblet, and she drank the wine with gusto, happy to let all her pent-up tension ebb from her body.

The roaring heat from the fires, the dizzying glow of torches swinging over her head, the pagan abandon of their dance, the sweet wine that had already gone to her head, and the drums she mistook for her beating heart, made Thea feel as if she would swoon.

She fell out of one ring and stood back, dazed, blinking smoke from her eyes. Some of the men were pulling draped fabric from their partners, unveiling the women's nude bodies.

A jolt of pleasure shot down Thea's belly and settled between her legs. All the women, Lucy and Gizelle, even Lady Amelia among them, moved to and fro, their breasts bouncing, their nipples hardened to puckered buds. Stretching and leaping on sleek pale legs around the fire, Thea could see pubic hair in every imaginable color, every curved and dimpled female buttocks, every exposed vulva

Her heart was racing now. She felt frozen to the spot. Thea tried to take a step forward to join them, but misjudged the placement of the ground beneath her drunken feet and would have fallen if not for a man catching her up.

The man grabbed her long train and pulled, sending her twirling out like a top until she unwound from the fabric in all her naked glory. Then she was propelled back into the ring of dancers.

The men were naked now and she laughed aloud, thrilled at the sight of jutting pricks and swinging balls parading like soldiers around the fire.

She danced with them, arm in arm, loving the freedom of the forbidden.

Soon the fires began to burn low. Some of the women jumped over the flames in order to procure good luck throughout the coming year.

Thea couldn't resist. She felt alive, free to do whatever she wanted. With her head tilted skyward and her long hair tickling her back, she ran forward and leapt into the air. The heat from the fire licked the insides of her thighs, kissing her sex, before she landed on the other side.

She fell into Colin's arms. He picked her up and swung her around, laughing, suckling her nipples, prodding her with his erection.

He guided her back into the sexually excited crowd. The men and women now danced in a provocative mating pattern. Hands on the hips of the woman in front of them, the men slipped their cocks between their slippery thighs, all moving as one in time to the beating drums.

Guzzle, two ahead of Thea in line, found her release before anyone else, crying out and rubbing her cunt relentlessly on the rigid prick between her legs, not waiting for penetration.

Colin was behind Thea, treating her aroused pussy to a thorough rubbing until she was on the brink herself. She squirmed against his delicious hardness, panting, close to climax.

The golden lady called out over the din of the increasingly boisterous revelers, "Beltane is a time of fertility and unbridled merrymaking. Choose your lover. Go into the wildwood and find the largest, living hawthorn bough. Return next morn to erect the Maypoles!"

The guests dispersed, the men grabbing squealing women and carrying them off into the woods for a night of carnal pleasure. Thea got bumped in the shuffle, jostled away from the fire until she stood alone on the edge of the woods.

What had happened? Who was her partner supposed to be?

She shivered with cold, wrapped her arms around her body, and sobered considerably

Everyone had just left her, the May Queen, to fend for herself. Even Miss Rose had disappeared into the darkness. All her longing for Jordan came back in a rush of emotion that eroded her playful facade. Utterly alone, a tear broke free and trailed down her cheek.

Why? Why hadn't he come for her?

Lance's bells jangled. She could hear the stallion's slow approach as he plodded up behind her. He nudged her hair with his nose, feathering warm breath across the side of her face.

"Go away, you great beast," Thea muttered, swatting her hand over her shoulder.

"But I have only just arrived."

Thea's heart lodged in her throat. Jordan.

She whirled around. He was there, sitting atop her white horse, more beautiful than she remembered. A wry grin hitched the side of his oh-so-kissable mouth.

"You bastard!" she yelled, startling Lance with her outburst so much that the horse reared up on hind legs, then jogged back out of her way.

"Where the hell have you been?" she insisted.

"Easy, boy," he calmed the horse. "Just a little hell-cat . . . nothing we can't handle."

His easy smile infuriated Thea. How dare he waltz up to her as if hadn't a care in the world! "I see you gave yourself a few minutes to spare today, arriving just in the nick of time."

"I told you I would come for you today. I always keep my promises." He eyed her naked breasts with, anticipation shining in his heated gaze.

Thea's resolve to hate him began to melt.

She wanted Jordan so badly she reacted on impulse. "You said you would "come" for me today. Take me into the woods and prove it."

She reached for him, and he swung her up in front of him on Lance's back. "I'm more than ready to come for you. I'll give you everything you desire and more, my May Queen."

Jordan gave the stallion his head, and the horse crashed into the woods, sailing over fallen logs and around looming black trees. Thea felt exalted, glorious. Jordan wrapped his free arm tightly around her middle and she held on for all she was worth, delighting in the wild ride.

Branches cracked as they flew through the brush, and they ducked to avoid low-hanging branches. Finally they arrived in a small clearing and Jordan reined in Lance and swung her quickly to the ground, pulling her down on top of him.

"Thea, God, I've thought of nothing else but making love to you. I will never let you out of my sight again." He held her face in his hands and plundered her mouth, kissing her breathless, probing with his tongue, taking his fill of her.

"Jordan . . . Jordan," she moaned, wet and throbbing for his penetration, wanting it hard and fast.

This was the man she had been waiting for! It was for Jordan, and no other, that she had trained her body to give and receive pleasure

She clawed at his clothes, desperate to get down to bare skin. He helped her, breathing heavily, his hooded gaze never leaving hers.

Then she had him, her hands pushed inside his pants, grasping his pulsing erection. She rooted with her mouth, breathing in the male scent of his hair-covered sac. Thea licked and kissed him, taking him in. She sucked hard, tugging at him, pulling back with her head until he groaned. She would die if she didn't devour every inch of him with her tongue, throat and lips.

"Thea, God, I--I can't take--much more of this." His voice shook with passion. He pumped into her mouth, rocking his hips while she captured the power of his thrusting shaft.

"I want to come inside you--" He withdrew from her mouth and pulled off the rest of her clothes. Thea lay back and spread her legs, parting her slippery sex with her fingers, eager to have him buried deeply. "No," he said, and rolled her over. "I've been waiting forever for this. We will do it my way the first time."

She didn't argue, just did as she was told, and rolled onto her stomach over his discarded clothing. She didn't care how Jordan made love to her, as long as he hurried.

He wrenched her hips off the ground until she was on her knees, her womanhood open and dripping for him. She pressed her face and shoulders down into the folds of his white shirt and held her breath.

"I will eat your sweet pussy until you beg for more."

She shrieked when Jordan lowered his head and licked a blazing trail up the backs of her thighs. He kept circling, running his hot tongue over her bottom and probing her anus with the tip of his tongue.

Thea wiggled against him, dying for him to lick her swollen cleft. But he teased first, nipping at her outer folds with his teeth, licking her pubic hair, laving the juncture of her thighs until she was coated with his saliva.

She turned her head sideways, could see his face, watched him run his tongue down the cleft of her buttocks to rim her tight, puckered hole again.

"Jordan, eat me! Eat me now, please!" She was begging, all right. She was dying for it.

Then it was his turn to taste every inch of her. Jordan buried his nose and mouth in her cunt, sucking and licking everywhere, pushing his tongue inside her vagina, nipping her clitoris with his lips.

All Thea could feel was his wet, slippery tongue, his hot breath, and his hands clenched at her raised hips while he tongued her. She screamed out her climax, bucking against his face.

She collapsed flat on her stomach and he penetrated her wet furrow in one smooth thrust. Jordan pumped her with unleashed power, jolting her hips off the ground, ramming into her relentlessly.

Thea's screams of ecstasy echoed through the forest.

"Fuck me--fuck me--fuck me!"

"I'm fucking you--fucking your sugar-coated cunt," he hissed, straining behind her.

Then he groaned, convulsing, and withdrew from her body in time to spew hot pulsing jets of his cum all over her bottom and bare back.

He collapsed on top of her, his semen lubricating their bodies, and rolled with her on the ground, arms and legs entwined, kissing her with animal hunger.

They made love twice more, learning the landscape of each other with slow, earth-shattering precision, before falling asleep.

The gentle jingling of Lance's bells woke Thea the next morning. Jordan lay sprawled beneath her, taking her weight easily and keeping her body from the cold ground. She was wrapped in his jacket.

But he wasn't asleep either. "Legend has it that a woman who arises at dawn on May Day, and washes her face in the morning dew, will be forever beautiful," he whispered, his eyes on her, smiling.

"Then I will do it," she said in a teasing way

"Only a formality, my precious angel. No amount of time or living could ever steal your beauty."

Thea's heart swelled and burst in her chest. She had to tell Jordan how she felt, even if it meant losing him forever.

"I love you, Jordan Dunn," she said, tracing her fingers lightly over the planes of his handsome face. "I can't live without you--there, I've admitted the worst of it. I will love you forever, so if this displeases you, I will let you leave without me today."

She closed her eyes, and clenched her fists on his chest, too afraid to face his rejection.

"Thea." Barely a whisper, her name on his lips was as light as gossamer threads floating through air.

She dared open her eyes. He stared up at her with obvious love and devotion. "You are mine, Thea. Forever."

Lance snorted and tossed his head, as if to scold.

"Oh, yes, m'lady," Jordan continued. "Never doubt it for a moment . . . I love you too."
